NAD Viso iPod Dock Review Big Sound From The Boom Tube NAD’s Viso 1 throws a ringer into the iPod dock war By Ben Court, Posted Date: May 29, 2012

In my house, the CDs sit gathering dust, the speakers stand idle like twin statues, and the amp has been in sleep mode since the last presidential election. Yet our appetite for music is voracious: Our toddler needs his Beatles songs, preferably instantly, the wife likes a side of Beethoven with dinner, and I surf all over the place, listening to everything from Girl Talk’s mash-ups to Ali Farka Toure’s desert blues. It’s a quirky dynamic, in which the availability of the tunes are often more important than the quality of the sound. (Hence the dormant hi-fi gear.) Our musical pacemaker for the last couple of years has been the $250 Bose iPod SoundDock. In terms of sound quality, it punches in far above its diminutive size and weight, and has helped stave off many a tantrum and provided the soundtrack to many memorable meals.

Unpacking the NAD Viso iPod dock (nadelectronics.com), it was clear that we were dealing with a different sort of beast. At $600, it’s three times the price of the Bose, and at 12 pounds and 18 inches long, it’s also three times the size. Its hollowed-out sides evoke a sports car’s twin mufflers, but inside it’s actually two 15 watt speakers and a 50-watt subwoofer made by speaker-maestros PSB. Set up is simple—plug it into the socket, plug in your iPod or iPhone, and listen. (It can also stream from any Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, tablet, or laptop.) Fortunately, Apple’s intuitive interface remains front-and-center—there’s no half-baked hijacking of the controls with a clunky new mechanism that you have to learn. The included remote is equally simple—you can pause the music, skip tracks, and adjust volume. All you need, really.

At first, while playing at very low volume, the Viso 1 was a bit underwhelming: the music sounded a bit shallow. But at louder volumes the impact really started to build. You could hear greater depth and deeper bass that made the Bose sound tinny. (Update: The manufacturer clarified after we published this that the equalizer settings can adjust for that low-volume sound quality to improve richness and depth.) While the sleek exterior design of the Viso 1 is eye-catching, the guts are why it sounds so good. NAD’s proprietary Digital Direct Amplifier technology to make your digital files sound better than they ever could with headphones or with conventional docks, since it bypasses the generally weak audio hardware within the iPod and uses its own hardware and software to enhance the sound. That’s really what it comes down to: now you can have all your music, whenever you want it, and there’s no sacrifice in quality for the convenience.
