Jason Statham. Vin Diesel. Walter White (err, Bryan Cranston in Breaking Bad). It seems like Hollywood’s biggest badasses have one thing in common: They’re bald.
And now science explains why. In a new study from the University of Pennsylvania, men with bald heads were rated as more dominant than men with manes. What’s more, men who had their hair digitally removed were viewed as an inch taller and able to bench-press 13 percent more than their hairier selves, explains study author Albert Mannes, Ph.D., a professor at Penn.
“Shaved heads are often seen in traditionally masculine professions, like the military, law enforcement, and sports,” says Mannes. Plus, departing with your hair shows confidence.
If your hairline is receding faster than your bank balance on summer vacation, consider going bald. Let Craig the Barber, CEO of the Grooming Concierge and owner of online grooming source TheMensRoom.com, show you how to do it right. 1. Start Slowly
Go for a buzz cut first. This way, you’ll see if there are any hidden birthmarks, bumps, or scars before you take the plunge.
2. Go with the Grain
Shave in the direction of hair growth the first few times to prevent irritation. Then, if you want a closer shave—and there’s no irritation—shave in the opposite direction. Warning: The back of your neck is sensitive, so shave in the direction of hair growth when you reach that area.
3. Use an Aftershave Balm
Since shaving removes a layer of skin, you need an aftershave balm—like Village Barber’s Shaving Balm ($25, villagebarber.com)—to quicken the healing process. And don’t forget sunscreen—failing to cover up your dome is one of the 8 Sun Protection Mistakes You Don’t Know You’re Making.
4. Maintain It
Shave no more than every two days to give your skin a breather. You’ll still look bald, but your scalp won’t become irritated.
5. Wear It Proud
Craig has noticed something about his bald clients: They feel like they need to “own it” in order to wear it right, which means they wear it with confidence comparable to even the toughest of on-screen action stars.
